The hardest part on the boards is when the water is just sitting in there, pushing against the boards. Once the water starts to freeze, it's going to freeze within it's container (just like an ice cube tray), pushing up more where there is the least resistance. So when you get to that point, you don't really rely on your boards except to keep the puck within the confines of the rink. :-)
