You said it...the most important thing is that they are having fun. My first rink was a rickety OSB plywood number with four different types of supports (wooden stakes, rebar, etc). But it held water, and then ice, and my son took his first-ever steps within its boards. That fact alone makes it as functional as any NHL stadium in my opinion.
