Rink Construction Timeline Issue and Misc. Questions

Postby Will » Wed Nov 20, 2013 1:07 am

Hey everybody,

First, I just want to say that I appreciate everyone being willing to chime in with suggestions to help us newbies get started.

My first question is regarding what to do about an inconveniently planned 3-week vacation from about Dec. 22- Jan. 10. I'm assuming the ground will be too hard to drive in the stakes for the bracing in January, but will the elements ruin my frame if I build the whole thing before we leave?

My next question is how do you fill the rink once it's built? Do you fill it all at once and then let it freeze, or do you fill it one layer at a time?

Lastly, how much of an effect can a day with a high of 40F have if the rink receives a fair amount of sun?

P.S. Since this seems to be a popular question to ask rookies: Yes, l know about checking the slope of my yard, it's actually on my to-do list for tomorrow! :)

Hey Will,

Welcome to the site. That is definitely an ill-timed vacation for a backyard rink enthusiast!

As long as you build your frame strong enough (with enough support), the elements "shouldn't" ruin it (says the guy who had to re-erect an entire side after a vicious windstorm came through my area.) Bribe a neighbour or relative with a case of beer to check on your setup every once in a while and you should be good.

Once the rink is up, it is preferred (and suggested) that you complete your entire fill at one time shortly before you are expecting a consistent drop in temperatures.

If you have a good thick ice surface, a single day of above-freezing temperatures will soften the ice a bit but it won't do too much damage, especially if you are using a tarp since you won't lose any water. This also depends whether or not the particular day is in early January or late February since the sun is 'hotter' later in the year and will have more adverse effects.

Cheers
Kevin
