Perfectly Imperfect Rink

Hello from Waterloo, Ontario. This is our 3rd year having a backyard rink and our 1st year with one made without using packed down snow!
We're loving it ... even with all it's imperfections. A leftover camping tarp, snow/ice moguls at the top corner thanks to our extremely unlevel yard, boards propped up with lawnchairs, a bumpy edge of snow around the boards thanks to a weekend of freezing rain & warm temps, and so many more little things that we adults notice.
Having said all of that, our backyard rink is absolutely PERFECT!! The kids have been out skating almost every day since January 1 and my husband and I, while we're inside enjoying the quiet, have lots of great ideas to improve the rink for next year :)
This site has become my winter friend ... over the years I've found support, encouragement, answers and a community of others who are as excited about backyard rinks as I am. It's taken me 3 years to prove that our backyard rink isn't just a 'cute winter activity', but it's been worth it ... my husband is now as on-board as I am and the kids who can help out with shoveling and flooding, are now pitching in!! We're looking forward to bigger and better next year!
Thank you!!
Heather
PS. I haven't figured out how to fill out the profile yet ... our rink is 22 x 34 with a blue tarp over a combo of old logs, ripped plywood, planters filled with dirt, 4x4s holding playground mulch in, and packed down snow with snow sides :)
