Hi John, I spent a few years making lake rinks. The second year I did it, I wanted really "good" ice. I built a hand pull sled out of an old pair of skis, some plywood, and a 2x4. I mounted a 3 inch trash pump to it and would pull it out to rink. Then I would tap a hole with my ice auger to the side of the rink and completely flood it, it was as nice as indoor ice. The 3' pumps are capable of 12,000 gallons an hour. If you get good snow fall, you can even make snow boards and freeze them down too.
