Saw this article on Deadspin and (as a first year Rinkbuilder) it's certainly my worst fear.

This summer I even asked my town's building inspector if there were any issues/restrictions around a backyard rink. He said only time restrictions for noise/lighting, something that most of us would abide by without even being asked. But that doesn't stop some terrible claim like in this article from popping up sometime in the future.

Get all the neighborhood kids to start playing road hockey in front of his house.

This is an anomaly. I live in a neighborhood in MN that is getting ready to turn over. Meaning that most are empty nesters or retired and they absolutely love our rink. The comments that they have made are, I love to watch all the kids play, we love the sound of the boys laughter, brings back old memories when I hear the puck hitting the boards, my husband watches out our window for hours at a time, etc. My biggest fear is the spring. Will the liner still hold 15,000 gallons of water before I get a chance to pump it out or will it rush into my neighbors yard / basement. Talk to your neighbors about the rink. Chances are they will not only think it's a great idea but will probably want to help, drink your beer and have great ideas on how to improve it each year.
