Is the general consensus for resurfacing that just running a hose and keeping it moving is as good or better than a home-boni type setup?

It's good enough. I bought all the pieces to make a rink rake last year, but the hose by itself worked just fine.

Just as good, not better. Once you rink-rake, you won't go back.

I use the open hose method myself. I had a couple of years using the PVC resurfacer, but between the towel sticking, the shaft cracking, and having to hook it up to the hose (just another thing to do in 10-degree weather), I've stopped using it. I've had pretty good ice with just the hose these last few years, but the major thing to remember is to not let it pool too long, lest you get shell ice. Keep that hose moving.
