We generally recommend (and sell) 6mil. It's a good balance between quality and price. I've seen 5mil and that's probably fine too...and someone I know locally used a VERY thick inground pool liner for years and years...but those are extremes.

Mine are 4mil and typically hold up against most issues.

I've used 6mm clear. Do you guys think it's better to go with white? I bought a 40x100 foot roll last year and got two uses out of it, although it seems like I've had more leaks this year. I suppose the plastic does dry out a bit and get more brittle...has anyone else had similar issue?

I used a 50x100 blue tarp for the first couple of years and I was just happy to have water staying in something other than running through the snow and down the lawn. If I can be successful with a blue tarp (and I have seen others with green tarps), clear ain't going to make a bit of difference in my opinion.

I think if you leave your tarp in storage away from the elements, you should be fine. Just watch out for those darn squirrels and chipmunks because they love chewing on plastic.

I use 6 mil. clear plastic for my 30' x 20' rink and it seems to work fine!
