Shell Ice...Aaaccckkk!

Hoping for perhaps one more weekend of skating here in Minneapolis...

I put a layer of water (more than a simple resurface) on last night to keep the sun from chewing through more of my most exposed wall...and today I have a MAJOR seam of shell ice taking up about 75% of the surface.

What to do...I know its been discussed before, but I figured Id throw it out to the group anew...

Scrape and chop it away...then resurface with the crude homeboni a bunch of times when its sub-zero?

Thanks all!

Hey, just be happy you still have ice? It's slush soup here in NH.

The typical solution is to break up all the shell ice (I typically stomp around with my boots and a hockey stick), then flood to fill up the pockets. I don't typically use my homeboni to fill in shell ice pockets, as the towel tends to collect all the ice fragments and make a mess of things. I normally do either bucket dumps or I just walk around with the hose, letting it all flow out. You may need to do several thin coats depending on how deep your pockets are (under the shell ice, I mean :) )

Indeed..definitely grateful to still have ice. And it wouldn't even warrant a post if it weren't covering most of the rink!

OK...plan is to stomp/scrape it out and do some targeted filling with lukewarm water this evening...then a few boni passes once that freezes.

Is it bad form to rub it in if I'm able to rescue the surface and we get a few march skates in?! :-)

Thanks Joe.

Some of us are Wayne Gretzky, others are Jari Kurri, still others are Dave Semenko.

Enjoy the ice if you can get the skates in; others can live vicariously through you
