Jesse from Central Illinois

Hi everybody, I am relatively new at ice skating/hockey, but really enjoy it. My brothers and I are planning to build our first rink this year. I am sure i will have questions, so thanks in advance to anybody who answers!

Rink in the cornfield

Hi everybody, we are building our first rink this year and are planning to put it in a tilled cornfield. I have no expeirince whatsoever with liners, and am wondering if the liner will potentially be damaged by the corn stalks. The field has been ripped, so most of the stalks are layed over, and i a...

Minimum Ice Thickness

Quick question here, what is the minimum thickness my ice can be assuming my liner is sitting on frozen dirt (not grass). Could I get away with two inches? My rink ended up having a lot more slope than I had first calculated (my fault) and while my deep end is thirteen inches thick, my shallow end i...

Re: Minimum Ice Thickness

Raising the sides isn't a problem for us, our problem is a lack of water supply. We are in the process of drilling a new well, which might solve the problem completely, otherwise we are going to wait until right before we get some really cold freezing weather than haul water in until we have a minim...

Kick Boards

Yet another question here. 1) What do you all use for kick boards to protect the liner which is exposed above the ice? 2) Do you add these boards before or after the freeze. 3) How are kick boards attached? just a few screws through the liner? If I'm not reusing the liner I guess this is the best wa...

Re: Kick Boards

Thanks everybody, haven't finished kickboards yet, but hopefully this weekend I'll get them installed. Gets down to 18 F at night, freezes about an inch and a half, then two days later its back up to sixty and completely thaws out. Nothing like Central Illinois weather. Also am struggling with a cou...

Re: Question about Well-water use

As long as you know how good your water source is you should be ok. We have a forty foot deep well that is three feet in diameter, and it will run dry if a hose is left on for more than a few minutes. If you can find out who drilled the well and contact them they can probably help you.

Re: Bad Ice

When our rink froze the first time, it was during a cold snowstorm with blizzard like winds. Result=plenty of ridges and bumps on the surface. After it was solid enough to support us we just starting skating on it, going right over the bumps. Definately not ideal, but after a couple of hours most of...

Re: Hello! From Central Illinois.

hey Jim, I'm also from Central Illinois, about five minutes south of morton. We have been skating on our rink for a week now and its gonna get real cold this week, so it looks like you are in luck. I had to make my dad eat his words about our rink this year too, pretty fun actually. cheers and welco...
