Mike in Greater Boston area

Great site and hope to get on the ice soon! We haven't touched the ice with blades yet this season. I've built a rink almost every year since 2001 and every year I've added a few things. This last year I leveled the yard and increased the size (68' x 40') as my 7yo is now looking to do more than jus...

Waiting for the freeze in Boston

This has been a tough season so far. I filled the rink on New Years weekend and the kids can't wait to get out there - everyday they ask the same question - Is the rink ready yet? I usually wait to put on the bumpers until it's frozen and safe so the neighbors know its ready to use. I've been told a...

Re: Mike in Greater Boston area

kevmac - thanks for the input. I tend to agree the depth is going to an issue to get it to freeze. It would be easy enough to drop a pump in and lower the water level but I constructed in a way that if the level drops just a couple inches it will be below the kickplates that protect the liner. My la...

Re: First Hockey of the Year

Super jealous of the turnout! each year ive made my rink people tell me they cant wait to come skate, and ask whens the rink going to be ready. I try to get friends out for a skate and its a bunch of lazy no's and excuses. I have dreams of adding on and making everything really nice, but if im the ...

Re: Waiting for the freeze in Boston

Was able to get out on the ice on the Monday holiday but with pressure cracks sounding off we made it a kids only affair. Started out at around 10am with just myself and my 4 and 7yo. Once I got off the ice I thought it would be a short day with the temps inching up over freezing. But the sounds of ...

Re: NHL is back. Are you?

I'm a sucker - just love watching a good hard fought game and have been a Bs fan my whole life (I was a 7yo mite, or tyke when Bobby Orr et al won the cup). I guess I'm the kind of fan the NHL counted on during the lockout. When the puck is dropped on Saturday night I'll be watching. I look forward ...

Re: Water St Omni, 2012 - 13

Thanks guys - for a number of years I had a smaller (around 16x32) that was perfect for my daughter (now just graduated from college). It was 2x12 w wooden stakes and Home Depot liner. As she got older and now that there are a couple of high energy boys in the house, I expanded and changed materials...

Re: Happy Hockey Day Minnesota!

Fantastic video! I'm crazy jealous as I suffer thru a weekend in high 40s and just over an inch of bumpy ice. But help is on the way with a local forecast of a deep freeze for the next 7-10 days. Besides the obvious of living the dream of driving a seemingly 1/2 scale zamboni, what is that cool devi...

Re: -20'C is where it's at

Great news Kevmac. I know you've mentioned before that anything below 5 (-15C) is too cold because ice become's too brittle. A few years ago I did have a problem with ice that was resurfaced when it was very cold. How do you flood? Did you do anything differently than normal? Cold or hot water? Home...
