Re: Lighting

With the halogen lights, some post on home depot and lowes indicate that you should avoid getting any water on the glass as it will crack... anyone having any issues with the cold/ snow with these lights? I used a string of work lights last year and it worked well which I'll repeat, but would like t...

Re: Lighting

Thanks folks! I trolled the site all last year (finally registered) and love the content and the great feedback from everyone! Scrambled to build the rink 2 days before we went below freezing in early december, never dreamed we'd be skating into late March here in Southeast Michigan. Here's hoping f...

When to flood?

What's the thought on tempreture for flooding? Here in SE Michigan we have 10 days with highs hovering right around freezing (34-29) with lows at night in the mid 20's (26-20)... Our rink is fairly well shaded by the house, but we'll still get about 4 hours of direct sunlight. My hope is that we cou...

Re: When to flood?

kevmac - thanks for the input. when you fill this early, do you have any concerns with deer? This may sound odd, but when I was putting the lighting up the other night I had a half dozen making there way through my yard. Any chance they would walk on the liner filled with water? I'm concerned their ...

Re: Lighting

Thanks for the recommendation! I went with the 4 500x work lights as pictured in the other posts and the lighting is dramatically improved! Mounting to tree, house, playscape was a breeze!

Re: Snow and water and slush

Second year rink guy here, first year actually getting an education since conditions were perfect last year (not so much this year). My problem is the snow/ thin layer/ now slush problem. I'm going to leave it since there is really nothing to do based on reading through almost every post out there o...

Re: Snow and water and slush

well the sun came out and the snow has stop.... The couple inches of snow that was on top is fading into the rink. The surface once frozen will be a golf ball, but once it's solid I'll probably be able to salvage with some re-surfacing... Or more rain/ sun mix into the weekend will probably bring me...

Skating tonight in Michigan

Tonight will be the first skate of the season for the kids... Here they are on boots this morning. The ice was a aweful rough so my wife, who is about 100 lbs less than me, resurfaced to make the ice "skatable". The ice was talking back a little too much when I hopped on. Last year I would...

Painting the Ice White

Re: When to flood?

Well.... I got excited and went with Kevmac's advice and flooded... The weather conditions were borderline on Joe's recommednations, and we just barely froze enough to skate for about 24 hours before everything melted... New record for our house on earliest ice, Nov 21!
