melting at deep end

I have a 50x23 rink in Massachusetts. The ground is pretty sloped so the water is about 4" at the shallow end and more like 18" at the deep end. The rink freezes fine, but I had a question about the ice at the deep end. I've noticed that at the deep end the ice looks more 'wet' (its not ac...

Re: melting at deep end

It's been very cold this year, but the only way to really freeze all the way to the ground is by leveling your yard a bit to reduce the depth in your deep end. Ok. Thanks. Do you have any tips for leveling? There is lawn there so I can't put anything permanent. I did try building up small areas wit...

alternative water sources

Hi I've been using water from the mains (town water supply) to fill my rink for the last couple of years. Apparently the pipe bringing water into town is leaking or something and they have raised the price of the water (and sewage) considerably. My rink is not large (50x24), but I am beginning to wo...

Re: Board Suggestion

I've stacked 2x12 - it worked well. I have about a 8" slope. The maximum I've stacked is a 2x12, 2x6 and 2x4 all together. I put the 2x12 on the bottom, and put either a 2x6 or 2x4 on top. I put a couple of plates like this or this ) or slightly thinker on the back (non water/liner side). That ...

Re: melting at deep end

FWIW I figured out what was really going on here. Last year I built up underneath to make the water level around the edge such that it was frozen to the ground, and I still got water leaking over. Then I realized I did not have enough bracing - I secured the boards more firmly and magic - no more wa...

Repairing leak under the ice, now frozen on top

I was having a great game of 2x2 the other day (ignoring the creaking of the ice) and I fell through the ice near the boards. I must have cut the liner with my skates. It did not look like it was cut (although it was hard to tell), but there is visible evidence of leaking now - large pool of ice out...
