My First Rink

So I bit the bullet and built my first rink this weekend. I used 4x8 sheathing split in half at Home Depot and got a bunch of 2 foot long stakes, sunk them six inches or so into the ground and attached them to the boards. The space is pretty flat all around. I will probably flood it about 4/5 inches...

Re: My First Rink

I'll re-check before I fill. We are about to have a pretty good snow storm tomorrow night so I won't be able to fill this thing until at least the weekend.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Re: wind

I don't have an answer for you. But I just installed my first liner today. It's wicked windy out and it gave me a really hard time. I have bricks holding down the liner so it won't fly away. On this topic, I have a question for the forum - can I fill a liner that's not perfectly smooth? Does it matt...

Re: Warm weather blues

I live on Long Island and built my first rink after the New Year. Everyone around me is thrilled with these warm temps but I'm dying for some cold. Looks like we may get our wish by the end of the week into the weekend. At any rate, I feel your pain and I'm ready for the cold weather!

Re: Rink Rake - Buy or Build your own

For a total of $30 this was a no brainer. I stood in Lowes like an idiot for at least 45 minutes last weekend trying to find what I needed to make my own rink rake. In the end I never found what I needed other than a hot water hose and some PVC pipe that I ultimately didn't buy. I was advised later ...

Re: Warm weather blues

Well, it's about to get really cold here and of course we are going to get blasted with a 12/14 inch snowstorm ahead of the cold. I'm praying the rink freezes overnight before the snow starts or I'm going to have a real problem.

Re: weather men

So it's snowing here. The rink never completely froze so my rink is now 100% slush. Once that freezes I should be able to resurface and skate? We are dying here - in fact the whole neighborhood is holding their breath - I'm the first one in town to build a rink. It's supposed to get pretty cold here...

Re: Lighting

I just bought two of these at Lowes - the 500W ones with the tripod were like $24. Lights up the yard pretty good.

Re: weather men

Had my first solo skate last night. First time I've ever skated/played hockey outside. So awesome. Pic of the rink attached.

Re: Snow and water and slush

OK - so I had filthy mess earlier tonight. Got a little warm here yesterday then we got 8 inches of snow - under the snow was two inches of slush. Shoveled the entire rink and then cold water flooded the mess so it looks like the first picture. I figure I'll wait for it to freeze and then hot water ...
