Uneven ridge on my ice (aka the Grand Canyon)

Third year with a backyard rink, but my first post here and very happy to have found these forums, so hello to all! I had pristine ice on Sunday, didn't check it on Monday, then yesterday I went out and a little less than half was covered with snow. Under the snow, the ice was still smooth, but the ...

Suggestions for secondary barrier above boards?

I decided to go bigger this year, up to 84' x 44' from 64' x 32'. To accommodate this I had to switch to the other side of my yard, and apparently did a piss poor job with my line level as my deep end wound up 5 inches deeper than anticipated (was expecting 12", it's at 17"). I'm using Nic...

Re: Suggestions for secondary barrier above boards?

Thanks for the reply, I'm trying to decide between which of those ideas to attempt.

Re: Lighting

http://edgewatericegarden.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/let-there-be-light/ I used the method described in this blog, and it has worked beautifully. Just wanted to add this here in case someone is looking for an alternative to the halogens. I used halogens my first year, but would never go back after con...

Water pump = faster ice depth?

Beginning our fourth season here in NW Indiana, and while Googling "snow keep rink from freezing", I found the following article. http://howikis.com/Make_Your_Backyard_Ice_Rink_Freeze_All_the_Way_Through_in_a_Warmer_Climate I'd never seen a suggestion like this before, using the already co...

Re: Alternate option for sloped area??

I'd be really interested in seeing how this was accomplished. I moved my rink this year due to its larger size and I've got a lot more slope than I'd like.

Re: Water pump = faster ice depth?

kevmac, Thanks for the reply. Mpemba effect, well that is interesting! Filling from the house isn't an option, I'm so deep (17" of water up against an 18" Nicerink board) that adding more water isn't going to work. The pump is going to move a lot more water, a lot more quickly than the wat...

Re: Water pump = faster ice depth?

Kevmac, Thanks for the clarifications. We got slammed with a snow storm the night I was pondering attempting this, so I didn't get a chance to try it. Too much weight and not enough ice depth to hold the snow, so I had lots of water come up over the edges and trash the surface. Been here before! My ...

Re: Snow and water and slush

If you break the ice free around the entire perimeter so your block is "floating", you can pump water out. If your block isn't floating, it could tear your liner or create air pockets underneath. I've done this nearly every season to deal with torrential mid-winter rains here in NW Indiana...

Analyzing why it took so long for my rink to freeze

This is my fourth season, and I have moved up to an 84' x 44' rink. We had an early patch of really cold weather that, in seasons past on our 64' x 32' rink, would have had us skating already. However with the new rink, I was only able to get on the ice by myself during the last night of cold, and i...
