Hi from Rochester NY

Hi all, first time rink builder in Rochester NY here. I've got plenty of room, but my property is a bit slanted -- drops about 7" over 20ft one way, and doesn't really drop much the other way. I'm planning on doing a 26'x56' rink this year with 7/16" OSB as the frame (8ft long x 1ft high s...

Re: Hi from Rochester NY

Thanks Joe and Danny. I have been a little worried about the height in the deep end, and given the cheapness of OSB, I will take your advice and build higher. Not too concerned about pucks at this point, but having more wiggle room would make me much less nervous. I have been planning on wooden stak...

Re: Hi from Rochester NY

That makes sense. Been drawing it in Sketchup...I think what you're suggesting is like the attached images, right? I was thinking of sandwiching a mending plate in there, driving the screws from the inside. Also, same story on the corners -- one post on each side of the corner, with a L bracket inst...

Re: Hi from Rochester NY

Sketchup really isn't too hard to pick up. If you've got an hour you can watch the first three or four videos in their tutorial series. After that, you should be able to do quite a bit. http://www.sketchup.com/learn/videos?playlist=58

Re: Leaving snow on the ice in cold temps

I'm in a similar situation, and leaving the snow on the ice for now. I'm worried about the eventual slush mess, but don't have much of a choice at this point: my surface isn't thick enough to stand on in most places. But if I don't get rid of the snow, it's going to take longer to freeze. Not sure w...

Re: Failed 1st Experience

Glad to see you're going to try to salvage it. As another data point, I actually have at least 14" on my deep side and I"m using 16" high OSB all around. It's all held in by 2' wood stakes, each 4' apart, but only 2' apart on the deepest side and in the corners. So far, so good. It's ...

Filling with snow in forecast?

Hey all, second year rink builder here. I just got my boards up yesterday and haven't put the liner in yet. There's no snow on the ground at the moment, and I was thinking of putting the liner in and and filling over the course of the next couple days, as the temperature is typically below freezing ...

Re: Filling with snow in forecast?

Thanks kevmac. I'm not in a huge hurry, and I keep thinking about the possible mess I'm contending with if I try to fill before the snowstorm. I think I'll wait it out as suggested. I admit that part of me was hoping that with a partial fill just before the storm starts, the snow might just all melt...

Re: Screw length using 7/16osb

What type of stakes are you using? Last year (my first), I had 2' wood stakes with 18" high OSB and I drilled through the mending plates into the stakes. The stakes were almost 2" thick, so a 2" screw worked for me. This year, I got lazy and decided against mending plates in favor of ...

Re: Screw length using 7/16osb

Just reporting back: Overlapping OSB without using mending plates worked fine for me last season. A lot less work.
