Steve in Minne!

Hi guys, Steve from Minneapolis here. Started playing hockey as a 38 year old, when my 4 year old son asked me to "show" him. He's 8 now and regularly "shows" me! We had our rink on the lake for the past few years and it worked our great. This year, the city had to pump the lake ...

Re: Resurfacing - Water temps

The other good quality of Hot Vs. Cold resurface is that when you use cold water, occasionally the ice will peel away in layers. Using hot water prevents this from happening. However, if the climate in which you live has fairly warm temps by day this is usually not an issue. I have found that the &q...

Re: Tips or tricks for maintaining and making a rink on a La

Hi John, I spent a few years making lake rinks. The second year I did it, I wanted really "good" ice. I built a hand pull sled out of an old pair of skis, some plywood, and a 2x4. I mounted a 3 inch trash pump to it and would pull it out to rink. Then I would tap a hole with my ice auger t...

Re: Steve in Minne!

Hi Joe, Thanks for the tips. I already leveled the boards with a laser and cut shim panels to consume the difference from the bottom to the ground. I am still in the process of bracing the boards and then will follow-up with the liner install. Would you suggest freezing my 24" low spot in with ...

Re: Steve in Minne!

I get that Joe! The tops of my boards are laser leveled if they over-overflow, they will all over flow. In other words, I have already completed what you are suggesting. Someone told me that unless we get good cold temps, Ie: less than 10 degrees, that the layering is the way to go. If you say that ...

Re: Tips or tricks for maintaining and making a rink on a La

One cautionary note: depending on the depth of water where your rink is, you may need to tie off the suction so it doesn't drop to the bottom of the lake. If it does, you will pump up one hell of a lot of mud and sand which will ruin your day and your blades! Other than that, it's pretty straight fo...

Re: Tips or tricks for maintaining and making a rink on a La

I'm guessing that you probably had alot of snow and marginal temps? Gravity still works on a lake, so, the heavy snow will push the ice down and force water up. If the temps are not in the teens, it will stay up and possibly not freeze. I found that if I made make shift snowdraft boards, they would ...

Re: What's your "must have" rink tool?

My "Hand-boni"! Hands down, this thing lays down the water just like the real thing, makes my outdoor ice as good or better than indoor....Now just need to get rid of this half-hearted weather!!
