Hello from Chicago's North Shore!

Can't wait for some cold weather to arrive... After a summer/fall of planning, we determined the slope of the yard and laid out our boards....We went with 2x12s. Because we had a 4" slope from one end to the other, I ended up "scribing" boards so that the tops of the boards are all ap...

Re: Determining Ice Thickness

I built one of these....it has been really helpful. http://www.backyard-hockey.com/2010/12/03/build-your-own-backyard-rink-ice-thickness-ruler/ What i ended up using for the metal was a "Wreath Hanger" and marked it with a Sharpie...Works Great! http://www.lowes.com/pd_275496-86637-7008CSL...

Custom, In-Ice Logo?

Hi All, Just curious if anyone had done any In-Ice logos on their rinks. Was snooping around and found this site http://www.ddisigns.com/printedicelogos.htm?gclid=COPg3cXZz7QCFUZgMgodeG8AcQ but, as a DIYer I was looking for an alternative to buying--something that i might be able to do on my own for...

Re: Hello from Chicago's North Shore!

Here is an updated pic of the rink (before things warm up this week).

Thanks again to Joe for the great site!

Re: Custom, In-Ice Logo?

Not a problem....just thought I would ask. I think you are right in that it would be tenuous at best, but just thought i would ask....

Re: 14" of snow and liner isn't in

Be Careful buying the liner ahead of time, or at least store it away from where mice or varmints could get to it...... Was talking to Larry Versino from the Wilmette Bike Shop (Local expert in backyard ice rinks on Chicago's North Shore) and he mentioned that last year, because of how warm it was, t...

Re: Homemade Shade

Made me think of this quote....

"Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago."

Re: Hello from Chicago's North Shore!

The Lights have yet to explode, but I did lose one of my goals due to what I think was the cold weather and a hard slap-shot from the "Squirt" that lives next door....all good problems to have (cold weather and hockey loving neighbors!)

Re: To flood or not to flood?

If you are using a liner, I don't think there is any risk to flooding now....not sure what the 10-day forecast looks like, but I would flood now....am a rink-rookie (who is having an insane amount of fun so far with the skating) but that would be my advice...work case is that it melts a little befor...

Re: Crazy Concept? Pumping Out Water Under the Slab

Maybe I am crazy, but I tried lowering my slab and it worked great! When I filled in December, I added 4" in shallow end and about 12" in the deep end, but we got so much rain and sleet that in certain parts of my rink it started to overflow. Not a serious problem, but with hockey pucks at...
